More Video: Friday's Football Practice Report

ATHENS, Ga. --- The fifth-ranked Georgia football team logged a 90-minute practice on Friday as the Bulldogs continued their preparations for the Capital One Bowl game against No. 21 Nebraska on New Year's Day in Orlando.

Friday's session marked the third bowl practice of the week for the Bulldogs.

"We had a really good practice today," Georgia coach Mark Richt said. "It was a shortened practice with no kicking, and the guys had very good energy and got after each other a little bit. It got heated up a little bit and that energized the day. Afterward, we ran them hard and they all ran their times. It was a pretty good day."

The Bulldogs will have seven more practices in Athens before taking off for Christmas and reconvening Dec. 26 in Orlando for the final preparations.

On Friday, the Bulldogs were without a handful of players, but they had a good excuse. Chris Burnette, Sanders Commings, Bacarri Rambo, Christian Robinson, Cornelius Washington, Ty Frix and Luis Capella participated in the fall commencement in Stegeman Coliseum while the Bulldogs were practicing. Also graduating on Friday were former players Terrence Edwards and Jonathan Owens.

Richt was asked about the Bulldogs' offensive line and Coach Will Friend's approach during the bowl workouts.

"He's challenged all the linemen," Richt said of Friend. "He told them, 'I don't know who will start this game. If you want to start, you've got to prove it on a daily basis.' He wants to keep everybody sharp and competing. I think we'll have a good competition now and again in the spring. The guys need to keep earning it."

Richt confirmed that early enrollee Ryne Rankin, a linebacker from Orlando, was in Athens on Friday and will work out with the Bulldogs on Saturday.

"He'll get his first taste of it (Saturday)," Richt said. "He's very physical, very tough, stout and a sturdily built guy who likes contact."

The Capital One Bowl will be played Jan. 1 at 1 p.m. and will be televised by ABC.
