Three Bulldogs Named To Sporting News All-America Teams
Jarvis Jones

Dec. 13, 2012

ATHENS, Ga. --- Junior outside linebacker Jarvis Jones, true freshman tailback Todd Gurley and true freshman right tackle John Theus have all been named to Sporting News All-American teams.

Jones was named to the All-American Team while Gurley and Theus were included on the Freshman All-American Team.

Jones has already been named a Walter Camp, an Associated Press and an AFCA All-American this season.  There are 10 players from the Southeastern Conference on this year’s Sporting News All-American squad.

Gurley and Marshall become the sixth and seventh Bulldogs to be named to the publication’s Freshman All-American Team in the last six years.  Tailback Knowshon Moreno and left tackle Trinton Sturdivant were the last Georgia pair to receive the honor in the same season in 2007.  Nine of the 26 players on this year’s Freshman All-American Team are from the SEC.

A 6-3, 241-pound native of Columbus, Jones has 77 tackles, 22.5 tackles for a loss, 12.5 sacks, seven forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and an interception in 11 games this season.  Currently, Jones leads the NCAA in forced fumbles per game (.64) and tackles for loss per game (2.05).  He was named the AP SEC Defensive Player of the Year last week and was a unanimous selection to the All-SEC first team.  In addition, Jones was named to the All-SEC Coaches first team.

Gurley, a 6-1, 218-pound native of Tarboro, N.C., became the 12th Bulldog to rush for 1,000 yards in a season and the first since Knowshon Moreno in 2008.  Gurley has gone for 1,260 yards and 16 touchdowns (a UGA freshman record) on 199 carries (6.3/carry).  Only Gurley and Walker have tallied 1,000-yard seasons in their true freshman seasons.  Currently, the Associated Press All-SEC First Team selection is second in the SEC in Rushing Yards Per Game (96.9), tied for second in Scoring (102 pts.) and third in All-Purpose Yards Per Game (124.3).

A 6-6, 309-pound native of Jacksonville, Fla., Theus has started all 13 games at right tackle for the 11-2 Bulldogs.  He was named to the SEC Coaches’ All-Freshman Team after helping the Bulldogs set a school record for points in a season with 484, which ranks ninth best in SEC history.  Theus helped give quarterback Aaron Murray time to become the first quarterback in conference history to throw for more than 3,000 yards in three consecutive seasons.

Fifth-ranked Georgia will face No. 23 Nebraska in the 2013 Capital One Bowl in Orlando on Jan. 1 at 1 p.m. ET.
