Georgia Post-Game Quotes
Georgia vs. North Texas
Sanford Stadium
September 21, 2013

Georgia Head Coach Mark Richt
Opening Statement...
"I think the biggest key in the game was the defense and how well they played. Overall, the defense stepped up and played well. Offensively, anytime you go over 600 yards, that's a pretty good day too, so they did some things well. Our special teams were good, but we had some bad things obviously. We've got to rise to the challenge and do better than that."

On North Texas...
"This was a big game. I wasn't kidding when I was trying to explain to everyone that this is a good football team. The only thing I saw different was an inch or two in height. These guys are really good players and they are really well coached. They gave us one heck of a ballgame."

On Reggie Davis' TD...
"That's got to be exciting for him for his first touchdown catch."

On Aaron Murray getting to 100 TDs...
"To get to 100 is a tribute to Aaron, but it's also due to a lot of receivers, a lot of pass blockers and a lot of coaching. He deserves the credit, but it takes the team to get that done."

On LSU next week...
"We've all got big hopes and big dreams. Everyone in the stadium will be thinking about division championships and conference championships and possibly staying in the hunt for the national championship. This will be the third top-10 team we've played in four games. We're 1-1 in those and it would be phenomenal if we were 2-1."

QB Aaron Murray
On the offense...
“Everyone’s going to “Monday Morning Quarterback”, but at the end of the day it’s a win. We’re not going to apologize for winning the game. I thought our team stumbled here and there and I’m really proud of how we fought through it and the way we finished. We preach “Finish the Drill” and we definitely did that today.”

On next week’s game versus LSU...
“They play at 7:30 tonight so I’m sure everyone on this team will be watching that game. We’ll pick a couple things up from the game tonight watching it and then get in [to the film room] tomorrow and start breaking them down.”

LB Leonard Floyd
On the defense...
“We’re coming in every week working hard and getting into the playbook and then performing on the field. We’re getting better every week.”

On today’s game...
“It felt great. I just came in and at the first snap I just said ‘I’m going to go all out every play’ and I just happened to get two sacks and make some plays. It felt great.”

S Tray Matthews
On North Texas...
“Coach Richt and Coach Grantham preach to us about not taking any team lightly. We knew they were a good team. We knew we were in for a good fight. They started off [2-1] and we know they were good.”

On how this game will help next week’s preparation...
“It definitely will help prepare us to help get a feeling of how a team will throw the ball. We have different schemes for different teams so it might be a little different.”

WR Chris Conley
On today’s win...
“Watching the film this week we knew that North Texas was coming to play today. They’ve had a lot of success in their previous games. Their coaching staff ha done a great job of getting those guys excited to play and ready for each game so we knew it was going to be a fight. We struggled to execute in the first half, but we came in and made some adjustments. We came out and executed the game plan and got back to Georgia football, and that’s what we needed. Every win is a good win.”

On today’s weather...
“There was a little bit of rain today but I don’t think that held anyone back. We had a lot of opportunities and I think that we started to take advantage of them in the second half. “

North Texas Post-Game Quotes
Georgia vs. North Texas
Sanford Stadium

North Texas Head Coach Dan McCarney
Opening Statement...
“We lost to an outstanding football team today. I am proud of the effort of a lot of my guys. This game is hard to swallow because for a lot of the game I thought we played tough, physically football knowing that Georgia is talented, tough and tenacious. They are very deserving of their ranking. I think Georgia is a top-10 football team. We did a lot of positive things, but in the end it was too much Georgia and not enough of us. We had opportunities to make more plays but rarely are you going to win a game when your offense only scores seven points. We moved the ball at times, but seven points is unacceptable. Our special teams were outstanding for most of the day, but we gave up too many big plays defensively after we played very good and very positive defense.”

On coming so close...
“It is hard to swallow. Everyone put a lot into this game. I never got the sense of David vs. Goliath with this game. It was North Texas and Georgia. They have been winning a lot and we haven’t. We are moving in the right direction and Georgia has been there. Georgia has been very successful ever sense Mark Richt got to Georgia and we hope to get to that level where we really have a chance to close out and win games. We are taking positive steps but they aren’t big enough and we aren’t taking them fast enough for me. Two weeks from today we open conference play in New Orleans against Tulane and that is a game that will be of major importance to our program.”

On the special teams play...
“Our special teams is led by Tommy Perry. We were pathetic on special teams last year and it was embarrassing. We wanted to put a better product on the field when we called upon the special teams. We are making up a lot of ground in that area. When you have dynamic players like Brelan Chancellor it makes it easier. We work on punt block every day in practice and it was great execution. We are going to have to continue to have to have our special teams be a strength as we move into the C-USA race and it sure was today.”

On containing the run...
“Todd Gurley is a future first rounder. He is a sensational football player. Any time that you can hold a player like that to 12 yards as his longest run, you are doing some really positive things. Georgia wore us out later in the game. I thought overall we did a lot of good things against the run. It is the easy throws that we have to work on. Aaron Murray is a sensational passer and it was the catch-and-throws on their part and the lack of us being able to make a play when the ball was in the air was really disappointing. A lot of that credit does have to go to Georgia because they have a sensational football team.”

QB Derek Thompson
On whether or not his team felt like they were in the game with a chance to win...
“Early in the third quarter we tied it up on the blocked punt. We thought we had all the momentum, kind of took the air out of the stadium, and the defense got a three and out. Unfortunately, though, on offense were weren’t able to move the ball in the second half as well as we wanted to.”

On his offense’s performance...
“We did some good things on offense, but when you’re not putting points on the board it’s hard to justify that. We did some good things but there are a lot of things we can improve on.”

On whether or not the crowd noise had any effect on him...
“I’ve played in these types of games before. This isn’t my first game. I’m used to the loud environment. I think we did pretty well with the crowd noise. They were loud out there, absolutely, they had a good crowd even with the weather conditions. When they’re having to get loud in the second half on third down, it’s because you are still in the game and doing some really good things. We try to look at the big picture that we were still in it in the second half and when you come into these types of games that’s all you can really ask for.”

WR Brelan Chancellor
On his kickoff return for a TD in the second quarter...
“The kickoff return guys gave me great blocks and we finally executed. I ran to where was open. It was a big momentum shift. We wanted a big play and got one, so everyone rallied around and got ready to play. We had a different kind of attitude.”

On playing in the Sanford Stadium atmosphere...
“I don’t really care how many people are in the crowd. I wouldn’t care if it was just my mom. I’m going to go out there and play just the same every game.”

On the North Texas special teams’ performance today...
“We just care about special teams. Guys care about being good - or great - on special teams. So it’s just about everybody having that want to be good. The blocked punt was a big momentum shift. Everybody got juiced. We got pumped. Everybody was ready to go out there and win the ball game.”
