BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Georgia senior offensive guard Chris Burnette has been named the Southeastern Conference Football Community Service Team Player of the Week, as announced by the league office.

Burnette is the third recipient of the award this season, as Mississippi State quarterback Tyler Russell and Kentucky linebacker Avery Williamson have also received the award earlier this season.

Burnette has volunteered in a number of various community service events in the Athens and Atlanta area, including Home Runs for Hometown Rivals, Camp Sunshine and "UGA Day - Learn, Play, Excel."

At the Home Runs for Hometown Rivals Baseball Game at Foley Field, Burnette was paired with Clarke County Special Education students and then assisted the students with activities such as running the bases and taking at bats.

At the "UGA Day - Learn, Play, Excel" in Atlanta, Burnette spoke with children from Drew Charter School about the importance of education, respecting authority, anti-bullying and perseverance.

In addition to his work at Camp Sunshine, which provides recreational, educational and support programs for children with cancer and their families, Burnette also participated in the Bulldogs Battling Breast Cancer Golf Tournament.

Burnette has been inducted into the UGA Leadership Education Development program, the student-athlete group recognized for academic and athletic success, leadership, and campus and community service involvement.

A finance major from LaGrange, Ga., Burnette is a three-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll. He was also named a top-10 finalist for the 2013 Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholar Award.

Burnette started a combined 24 games in 2011 and 2012, and he was voted to the All-SEC Coaches' second team in 2012. Prior to the start of this season, he was named to the preseason watch lists for the Outland Trophy and Rotary Lombardi Award.

Burnette and the rest of the Georgia Bulldogs will enjoy a bye week this weekend before returning to action at home next Saturday, Sept. 21, against North Texas. Kickoff is set for 12:21 p.m., and the game will be broadcast on SEC TV.
