Howard Blog: Radio Crew Ready To Go On The Air
Sept. 3, 2010
It's time to stop the talking and start the knocking, or in our case, continue the talking...hours of it! The long-awaited football season is here and it begins on what is expected to be a glorious Saturday. The people that will bring you 10 hours of football programming each game day on the Georgia Bulldogs Radio Network from ISP deserve some recognition. Our day starts with veteran engineer/producer Charles Youngs arriving at Sanford Stadium for the opener, under the veil of darkness, to begin the process of constructing our broadcast. He is responsible for connecting the dots as we work from 4 separate sites during the day. Hotel Indigo in Athens, Tailgate Show Central under the bridge at the Tate Student Center, the Georgia locker room and, of course, the Larry Munson radio booth in the Dan Magill press box, are housing our microphones. Charles is assisted by engineer Tim Becker at Hotel Indigo, where the first hour of our broadcast originates. David Shumate is the coordinating network producer at our ISP studios and will also be our scoreboard host this season. In addition to David, we have added two more fresh voices to the on-air staff this year, which arguably may be the largest radio crew in all of college football. Veteran SEC broadcaster Charlie McAlexander joins Jeff Dantzler to get the day started with Bulldog GameDay from Hotel Indigo. Loran Smith and Neil "Hondo" Williamson are back to then host the 150 minute Tailgate Show. Joining them again is our game analyst and Circle of Honor inductee, former Georgia QB Eric Zeier, and new to the broadcast this year, former Bulldog DB Daryll "DJ" Jones, who will bring his insight to the Tailgate Show. He may also bring his National Championship and SEC rings with him. Former WSB-TV sports anchor Chuck Dowdle adds sideline duties to his post-game locker room interviews and Tony Schiavone...yes, THAT Tony Schiavone, will go "collar and elbow" in the booth as he co-produces and serves as our spotter. Another pair of former Bulldog greats will join Jeff Dantzler for Dawg Talk after the game. Kevin Butler and David Greene will give their analysis as we wrap up the day with 2 hours of post-game programming. And to answer the other two questions that many of you have as we prepare to kickoff the season...yes, we ARE ready, and Larry is doing pretty well as his 88th birthday approaches this month. I know he's ready, too. GO DAWGS! |
