More Video: Monday's Practice Report
Aug. 13, 2012
ATHENS, Ga. --- The members of the Georgia football team went through their first day of fall classes on Monday, followed by a two-hour workout on the Woodruff Practice Fields.
The Bulldogs wore helmets, shoulder pads and shorts for Monday's workout, which was the 12th of the preseason practices.
"It was not bad, not great, not good enough probably to become a champion today," Georgia coach Mark Richt said. "They're still trying to get it done, but I thought I saw a little bit of guys not giving every little ounce they had. I'm not saying it was the entire team, but I saw enough going on that was not that exciting to me. It was not an awful day by any stretch. We're making progress. But we've got to create good habits.
"I told them this is the toughest time of the year. Camp is great because it's just football and you're excited about getting the season started. When camp breaks, its anti-climactic. You're sitting here now for three weeks waiting to play a game. Now it's time to focus and not lose momentum created in camp. The bottom line is we have to be mentally strong enough to continue habits that will help us win. We're creating habits, whether they are good or bad. Even 90 percent is not quite good enough. We want to get everything out of them."
The Bulldogs will take Tuesday off and will resume workouts with a scrimmage on Wednesday.
"We want to see continuity on offense and defense, especially with the starting units," Richt said. "I want to see the No. 1 units dominate and I want to see guys on the No. 2 units making plays. This is another opportunity to play full speed, to play fast."
End Ray Drew (concussion), tailback Brandon Harton (hip contusion), defensive back Malcolm Mitchell (shoulder contusion), cornerback Branden Smith (shoulder contusion) and cornerback Dawian Swann (cervical sprain) participated in some aspects on Monday's practice but were not allowed to have any contact.
Sixth-ranked Georgia will play host to Buffalo in the season opener Sept. 1 at 12:21 p.m., and the game will be televised on the SEC Network.
The annual Fans Picture Day will be held Saturday in the Reed Plaza area of Sanford Stadium. Georgia football players will be on hand for photos and autographs from 3-5 p.m. between Gates 2 and 4. Richt also will be available from 3-5 p.m. for those with ticket coupons. The other UGA athletic teams will be on hand for Picture Day from 1-3 p.m.
Tickets to the home football games against Buffalo and Florida Atlantic (Sept. 15) are on sale to the general public and can be purchased online at http://gado.gs/4a or by calling the UGA Athletic Association ticket office at 1-877-542-1231.
