Joined by former Bulldogs Garrison Hearst, Greg "Muddy" Waters, Mitch Davis, Greg O'Neal, Hason Graham, Joe Dupree, Maurice Hall, Chris Wilson, Charles Pledger, Greg Tremble, Frank Harvey, Bill Montgomery, Greg Bright and others who suited up in red and black during the early 1990s, Jones hosted the Travis Jones Football Fundamentals Youth Camp for the second year in a row on June 29-30.
Jones said that the purpose of the two-day camp was to give Macon area youth a chance to learn during the summer. "As a former player, I know the significance of having had a constructive outlet on which to focus my energy, but more importantly having had something positive to be passionate about," Jones said. "That passion, coupled with opportunity and good-old fashioned hard work is what I believe is the key to success."
Jones, an Irwinton, Ga., native, said 195 campers ages 8 to 15 showed up during the free camp. In addition to breakfast and lunch, the campers also received instruction from former and current collegiate and NFL coaches and players and had a seminar on nutrition and speed training from Monica Cabbler, who was an All-American triple jumper at Georgia. According to Jones, improvements to the camp will continue to be made to help campers in the future.
“My vision for the camp is to provide a safe and structured learning environment for young aspiring athletes where athletic confidence, as well as personal confidence, can be developed, enhanced and transferred into daily life skills," said Jones. "We want to instill in these youngsters personal accountability, persistence and perseverance that will enrich their lives and serve as a building block for achievement both on and off the field."
