Fair, Farriba, Pollard Inducted into Macon Sports Hall
Al Pollard

May 14, 2013

ATHENS ----- Three former University of Georgia student-athletes with ties to the city -- Terry Fair, Mark Farriba and Al Pollard -- are among the Class of 2013 of the Macon Sports Hall of Fame.  They will be formally inducted Thursday night in a ceremony at the Macon Coliseum.

Fair is one of the most decorated basketball players the city has ever produced. He led Southwest High School to an undefeated season, a state title and a mythical national championship in 1979 while earning McDonald’s All-America recognition. That season, as the Patriots recorded a 28-0 record while scoring 85.3 points per game, Fair averaged 21.1 points, 15.2 rebounds and three blocks.

After his high school career, Fair was a four-year starter at Georgia under coach Hugh Durham, averaging 12.1 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. He helped lead the Bulldogs to their only Final Four appearance in school history in 1983. In a Sweet 16 game against top seed St. John’s in the NCAA East Regional, he scored 27 points and had nine rebounds in a 70-67 upset. He was an All-SEC selection in 1983 after averaging 13.6 points and 7.5 rebounds per game and was selected in the fourth round of the NBA draft by the Indiana Pacers.

Fair played for more than a decade professionally in Europe.

Farriba has enjoyed success as both an athlete and as a coach. He starred at Stratford Academy in the early 1970s, earning all-state honors for the Eagles in football, basketball and baseball. He is regarded as one of the finest punters to ever come out of Macon. His high school exploits at Stratford resulted in him being named to the school’s inaugural Hall of Fame class in 2010.

He went on to Georgia on a football scholarship, and he was a member of the Bulldogs’ 1976 SEC championship team.

Farriba’s coaching football career has included stops at First Presbyterian Day, Stratford and Prince Avenue Christian in Athens. He has a record of 134-81-3 with a GISA Class AAA championship at FPD in 1985 and a GISA Class AAA title at Stratford in 2004. During six seasons at Prince Avenue, his teams compiled a 42-26-1 record while making the GHSA Class A semifinals in 2011 and the state title game in 2012.  He will be returning to coach Stratford this coming season.

Pollard led Central High School to the 1972 GHSA Class AAA football championship game against Lakeside-Atlanta after transferring from Northeast prior to the start of his senior year. During that season, he rushed for 1,229 yards, including 89 in the championship game in which Central lost 36-25. The week prior, in the state semifinals, he carried he ball 29 times for 126 yards, and the Chargers defeated top-ranked Moultrie 16-15 on penetration. He was named Class AAA all-state first team that season.

Pollard was a three-year letterwinner at Georgia and the starting fullback on the Bulldogs’ 1976 SEC championship team. Head coach Vince Dooley calls Pollard the best blocking fullback he ever coached. In the Bulldogs’ SEC title-clinching victory against Auburn, he rushed for 158 yards on 27 carries, and in the following game against Georgia Tech he had a team-best 112 yards on 24 carries in a 13-10 win.

Pollard also has excelled as a coach. He led Jonesco Academy to the GISA Class AA baseball championship in 1984, and he duplicated that feat the following year at Robert Toombs.

Tickets for the Macon Hall of Fame ceremonies are $25 and can be purchased by calling Bobby Cramer at (478) 474-3700.
