UGAAA Honors Legend Trippi At Friday Luncheon

April 13, 2012

ATHENS, Ga. --- The University of Georgia Athletic Association today honored Bulldog legend Charley Trippi on what was officially declared by the city "Charley Trippi Day," as the former collegiate and professional football star was recognized with commendations from Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal and Athens Mayor Nancy Denson, among others.

Trippi was honored at a luncheon held at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education on the UGA campus with over 300 in attendance. Dignitaries present included Gov. Deal, House Speaker David Ralston, Cardinals owner Bill Bidwill and president Michael Bidwill, Maxwell Club executive director Mark Wolpert, UGA president Dr. Michael Adams, representatives of the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame, Bulldog great Fran Tarkenton, former football coach Vince Dooley, and head coach Mark Richt.

Former Georgia cornerback Brandon Boykin also was honored as the first recipient of the Charley Trippi Most Versatile Player Award.

The MVP of the 1943 Rose Bowl, Trippi is still regarded by many as the greatest all-around athlete ever to play at Georgia. The Pittston, Pa., native led the 1946 Bulldogs to an 11-0 record, the SEC championship and a win over North Carolina in the Sugar Bowl. Trippi also led the SEC in scoring in 1946 and won the Maxwell Award as the country's most valuable player and was runner-up for the Heisman Trophy.

Following his collegiate career, Trippi led the NFL's Chicago Cardinals to the world championship as a rookie. He has been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, Pro Football Hall of Fame, Rose Bowl Hall of Fame and the State of Georgia Hall of Fame. He is one of only four Georgia players to have his jersey retired.
