Georgia Football Continues Spring Drills

March 21, 2012

ATHENS-----The Georgia football team held its second practice of the spring Wednesday afternoon, working out in shorts and helmets at the Woodruff Practice Fields.

This was the second of 14 practices before the annual G-Day spring game on Saturday, April 14 at Sanford Stadium. The Bulldogs practiced for two and a half hours with temperatures in the 70s.

"I thought it was a good practice," said head coach Mark Richt. "I'm looking forward to tomorrow and putting some pads on for the first time, which will be good, so these guys can actually run into each other and block somebody. They won't be able to tackle anybody to the ground until Saturday, but we'll have a little more contact tomorrow. I thought the defense made an awful lot of plays in pass skeleton."

The Bulldogs ranked fifth nationally in total defense a year ago, and nine of 11 starters from that unit return in 2012, including 12 of the 14 leading tacklers. One of the returnees in senior linebacker Christian Robinson, who said after Wednesday's practice that he expects to take on more of a leadership role in 2012.

"Ben Jones, Brandon Boykin and leaders like that were a voice on this team last year," Robinson said. "When people spoke, they listened. I feel like it's my time to speak up, and we have a lot of other guys like Sanders (Commings) and Bacarri (Rambo). It's our time to be the voice.

"It's fun being out here together," Robinson added. "The spring is about competition and going against your teammates every day. We have all the pieces in place. We're just focusing on the fundamental work. It's going well so far."

Georgia will return to practice on Thursday and will then have a morning practice on Saturday. The Bulldogs will don shells on Thursday before they put on full pads for the first time on Saturday.
