The Georgia Bulldogs put up 14 points in the final 3 minutes of the half to take a 16-0 against Michigan State heading into halftime of the Outback Bowl.
Georgia got the scoring started with a safety on Michigan State's first offensive play. Brandon Boykin tackled Keshawn Martin two yards into the end zone.
The teams traded punts for most of the first half until Aaron Murray found Tavarres King for an 80-yard TD. It was the first play of the drive and Georgia rolled the protection along with Murray to the right before the QB found King in the middle of the field.
After a 3 and out Michigan State punted to Boykin. Boykin caught the ball at the 8 and evaded the Spartans for a big 92-yard punt return.
Georgia Halftime Notes: 2012 Outback Bowl
Defense Pitches First Half Shutout: For the first time since game three/Coastal Carolina on Sept. 17, the Bulldog defense blanked its opponent in the first half. Also in bowl history, it was the first time since the 1998 Outback Bowl when Georgia posted a first-half shutout, leading Wisconsin 19-0 en route to a 33-6 victory.
Boykin's Bulldog Bowl Records: Senior Brandon Boykin raced 92 yards for his first career punt return TD (He has four career KOR TDs), a Bulldog bowl record and Outback Bowl mark. Also, the 92-yarder ties for second in Georgia history for a punt return TD, matching Prince Miller against Alabama in 2008. The previous bowl mark for a punt return was 68 yards by Charley Trippi in the 1945 Oil Bowl. Boykin made the tackle on the Bulldog safety for Georgia's first points.
Safety For A 2-0 Edge: For the first time since the Vanderbilt game in 2010, Georgia registered a safety. Senior Brandon Boykin tackled Keshawn Martin in the endzone on MSU's first play from scrimmage. It was set up after senior Drew Butler booted a 51-yard punt and was downed by sophomore Blake Sailors at the 3 yard line. In the first half, Butler had four punts for 179 yards, an average of 44.8.
Murray-King Combo: Sophomore QB Aaron Murray (13-for-16, 185 yards, 1 TD) and junior Tavarres King (4 rec., 146 yards, 1 TD) combined for a big first half including an 80-yard touchdown completion. Murray completed his first 10 passes for 97 yards before his first incompletion in the 2nd quarter. Also, he had a 60-yarder to King who had a career-high 146 yards receiving. Also of note, the 80-yard TD was a Georgia bowl record, the previous mark was a 67-yarder in the 1947 Sugar Bowl from Charley Trippi to Dan Edwards.
For Starters: Redshirt freshman Ken Malcome made his second career start at tailback (first came vs. Ga. Tech this year). Junior Christian Robinson made the starter at ILB for Michael Gilliard who had started the past 11 games. Sophomore Garrison Smith started at DE for the second straight game for the injured DeAngelo Tyson. While he didn't start, junior RB Richard Samuel returned to action for the first time since the win over Florida on Oct. 29 after being out with an ankle injury.
Points Off Turnovers: MSU scored no points off a fumble by QB Aaron Murray in the 2nd quarter.
