The University of Georgia men's basketball team has earned an at-large berth in the 2014 National Invitation Tournament and will play Vermont in Athens in the first round on Wednesday night. Tipoff is at 8:00 p.m.
Georgia, at 19-13 (12-6 in SEC), is one of four No. 2 seeds in the 32-team field. The winner on Wednesday will face the winner of the Louisiana Tech-Iona first-round matchup.
"We're very excited to have been selected to the NIT," head coach Mark Fox said. "Obviously, we had hoped to play our way into the NCAA Tournament, but in light of falling short of that, we're honored to be invited to play in the NIT. We're also excited to be playing at home, and just for the opportunity to continue our season."
The 2014 appearance will be Georgia's 12th time in the NIT. Bulldog teams have compiled an 11-11 record in the tournament. Their best showing came twice -- in 1982 and 1998 -- when those teams finished third by earning trips to the Final Four in New York.
All first-round games will take place at on-campus sites on March 18-19. Second-round matchups will be played between March 20-24. Third-round games, deciding the Final Four participants will be played at on-campus sites March 25-26. The NIT Final Four will be played at Madison Square Garden April 1-3.
"Our kids are really excited to still be playing," Fox said. "I think they have enjoyed playing with each other and they get to continue that. What I've enjoyed the most about this team is that they are indeed just that...a team. The fact that they're excited to continue playing, I think, is a good thing."
