ATHENS --- Tim Bassett, an All-SEC forward and a veteran of seven professional seasons, will represent Georgia as part of the 2013 class of the Allstate SEC Basketball Legends, as announced today by the league office in Birmingham. This group, which includes one ex-player or coach from each of the 14 member institutions, will be honored at the SEC Tournament March 11-16 in Nashville, Tenn.
Each Allstate SEC Basketball legend will be recognized at halftime of his institution’s first tournament game. He will also make appearances at the Sunkist Soda SEC FanFare exhibition.
Bassett, a native of Washington, D.C., starred as a power forward for the Bulldogs in the 1972 and 1973 seasons. Not only was he a pioneer in the integration of athletics at UGA, Bassett also made quite a mark on the court. As a senior he averaged 17 points, was the SEC’s rebounding champion with an average of 14.2 per game, and made the Coaches’ all-conference team. Despite playing just two seasons at Georgia, he still ranks among the school’s all-time top 10 in rebounding.
Bassett then played professionally for seven seasons, the first three for San Diego and the New York Nets of the ABA and later for New Jersey and San Antonio of the NBA.
This marks the 15th year of the SEC Basketball Legends program. Previous representatives from Georgia include: 1999 – Vern Fleming; 2000 – Alec Kessler; 2001 – Zippy Morocco; 2002 – Dominique Wilkins; 2003 – James Banks; 2004 – Lavon Mercer; 2005 – Ronnie Hogue; 2006 – Joe Ward; 2007 – Litterial Green; 2008 – Hugh Durham; 2009 – Shandon Anderson; 2010 - Tom Brennan; 2011 - Walter Daniels; 2012 - Willie Anderson.
