Lexington, Ky. ---With three Wildcats in double figures and a total of 15 three-point shots made, the University of Georgia men's basketball team (13-16, 4-11) took a 79-49 loss to No. 1 Kentucky (29-1, 15-0) on Thursday night at Rupp Arena.
"They just overwhelmed us," said Georgia head coach Mark Fox. "They are a great basketball team and the three-point shot was certainly their advantage tonight. They were on fire from three, and that is an area that we had to win to be a part of the ball game and have any chance."
Darius Miller had 17 points off of five three pointers and a two-point field goal to guide Kentucky while Doron Lamb tallied 13 points and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist had 12. Anthony Davis and Terrence Jones each had eight rebounds.
Donte′ Williams led the Bulldogs with 17 points and six rebounds to go along with two blocked shots.
"He's giving us everything," Fox said of the sophomore. "He's a dynamite kid. He has really improved throughout the year. He is a summer away from being a dominant player up front. I thought tonight he was very productive. He's just such a competitive kid. He's what I want all of our players to be about."
Kentavious Caldwell-Pope followed with nine points, five rebounds and two steals while Dustin Ware collected seven points. Marcus Thornton and Gerald Robinson notched six and five boards, respectively.
Kentucky used just under 42 percent shooting, including 6-of-13 from behind the arc, to get ahead 37-19 at the half. The Wildcats used scoring sprees of 7-0 in the first three minutes and an 18-7 run within a span of seven minutes to jump to a 29-13 lead. Georgia had a Donte' Williams follow-up off of a Robinson miss and a Ware layup from a steal to make the score 29-17 at the 5:46 mark.
The home team continued its sharp-shooting throughout the night, as Kentucky totaled nine triples in the second half. Donte′ Williams earned 13 points in the half despite Georgia shooting at 39.3 percent compared to Kentucky's 57.7 percent.
Georgia will face South Carolina in its last regular season home game on Saturday, March 3. The contest with the Gamecocks is set for a 1:45 p.m. start and will be featured on the SEC Network.
