2004-05 Season (Sophomore yr.)

  • 2004-05 team co-captain along with fellow sophomore Levi Stukes.
  • One of just two players to have started all 28 games.
  • Twice got his career scoring high last season, lastly January 12 at Ole Miss. Scored 17 of his 19 points against the Rebels in the second half.
  • Scored in double figures five times in the SEC schedule, for the last time in Georgia's win over Auburn on Feb. 19.
  • Tied career high in rebounds with 8 on Feb. 26 at Vandy.
  • It took him 12 games into this season to surpass his 2004 points total of 81.
  • Selected to the SEC's Academic Honor Roll.

  • Familiarity should breed improvement for Newman in his second season. At times last year he proved a capability of playing at the SEC level. Reaching that level consistently will be his greatest challenge of 2005.
  • Can play multiple positions, either facing the basket as a shooter or wrestling for position as a "banger" underneath the basket.
  • Continues to draw praise for exemplary attitude and work ethic.
  • Has a golden opportunity to display the progress he has made since the end of his freshman season. Will be counted upon for major contributions in 2004-05.

    2003-04 Season (Freshman yr.)

  • Gained valuable experience as a frontcourt backup to Jonas Hayes and Chris Daniels.
  • Played in every game for the Bulldogs, starting in one: the season opener vs. Western Carolina. Got the starting assignment when Hayes was still nursing an ankle sprain.
  • Joined a very short list of Georgia basketball alumni who have started their first collegiate games. Fellow rookie Levi Stukes, as well as Rashad Wright and Jumaine Jones are Bulldogs of most recent vintage on that list.
  • A member of the 2004 SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll.
  • Ranked second on the team in blocked shots with 16. Also had the team's second-highest free throw percentage among regulars at .741.
  • Increased confidence led to four consecutive solid outings during the pre-Christmas schedule.
  • Displayed a shooting range that extends past the 3-point stripe.
  • Showed that range at a most opportune moment with a huge trey in the last five minutes vs. Clemson.
  • Scored just one basket vs. Gonzaga, but it was a big one, giving Georgia a lead in the final 7:00 of regulation.
  • Also scored a lone hoop in the Bulldogs' second win over Kentucky. It became perhaps the game's most important bucket: a second-half offensive rebound and stickback, helping Georgia maintain its narrow lead.
  • A short-cropped haircut early in February has gave him a striking physical resemblance to ex-Florida star Matt Bonner (see photo above). Became the object of needling from teammates about the likeness.

    High School (The First Academy)

  • Named to Florida's Class AA All-State first team after an outstanding senior season.
  • Averaged 23.7 points, 12 rebounds and 4.2 blocks per game as a senior at First Academy. Led his team to a 20-11 record and a berth in the state playoffs.
  • As a junior he averaged 14.9 points and 8.3 rebounds.
  • First Academy won two district championships (2000-01) and also was a regional runner-up (`01) during Newman's career.
  • Scored 1,512 career points and pulled down 825 rebounds.
  • First-team Grange County selection, first-team Central Florida, as well as all-state as a senior.
  • Named to First Academy's Headmaster's List (4.0 or higher GPA) and was a finalist for the Orlando Downtown Athletic Club Scholar Athlete of the Year award in 2003.
