The Georgia Bulldogs hosted the Chattanooga Mocs at Stegeman Coliseum for the season opener. Georgia lost to Chattanooga 92-90 in overtime.
2016-17 Season Highlights:
◊ Voted the team’s Most Improved Player in balloting of staff and teammates.
◊ Secured playing time in 29 outings, including starts in eight of the season’s last nine games.
◊ Led Georgia in steals during five games and in blocks five times as well.
◊ Saw a considerable jump in his playing time – and contributions – during the final nine games of the season. After averaging 1.3 ppg, 0.6 apg and 9.3 mpg in first 25 games, upped those outputs to 3.8 ppg, 2.0 apg and 31.6 mpg thereafter.
◊ Posted what were then career highs for field goals made and attempted against Morehouse.
◊ After playing just four combined minutes in first four SEC games (with a pair of DNPs), logged 17 minutes, scored four points and grabbed three boards at No. 23 Florida.
◊ Earned his first career start against Mississippi State and produced career highs of 29 minutes and four assists and a season-best six boards.
◊ Established career-most minutes marks in three consecutive February games – 29 vs. Mississippi State, 32 vs. Kentucky and 36 at Alabama. And then matched the final mark against Belmont in the opening round of the NIT.
◊ Equaled his career-high scoring output – eight points against Chattanooga in his collegiate debut – against LSU.
◊ Tied his season-best rebounding mark – six boards against Mississippi State – and scored seven points (including 2-of-2 on 3FGs) against Kentucky in the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament.
◊ Played in 33 games, most of any Bulldog not to start at least one game during the season.
◊ Averaged 1.3 points, 1.4 rebounds and 9.1 minutes per game.
◊ Though a small sample size in relation to other members of the roster, produced the best field goal percentage on the Georgia roster (.552). Did so by connecting on 16-of-29 shots from the field.
◊ Solid linescore of five points, four rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals in exhibition outing against Armstrong State on Nov. 6.
◊ Earned a spot on georgiadogs.com top-5 plays of the week for his drive and double-pump dunk from the left wing against Armstrong State.
◊ Scored eight points in 26 minutes of action in the season opener against Chattanooga on Nov. 13, tallies that held up as his top contributions of the year.
◊ Perfect from the field in the season opener against Chattanooga, scoring six of his eight points in the second half.
◊ Pulled down a game- and season-high eight rebounds – all on the defensive end – versus High Point on Nov. 25. Tied for team-high board honors against the Panthers.
◊ Quietly made nice contributions through non-conference play, leading Georgia (including ties with teammates) in boards and assists against High Point, steals versus Kansas State and blocks versus Winthrop and Georgia Tech.
◊ Top SEC performance came against No. 25 South Carolina in Athens on Feb. 2, when he scored five first-half points to help Georgia build a 33-23 lead at the intermission.
◊ Logged 15 minutes of action against No. 16 Kentucky in the semifinals of the SEC Tournament, his second-most PT from December through the rest of the campaign.
◊ Coached by Robert Lee at Beaumont Central Medical Magnet.
◊ A two-time first-team All-State honoree by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC), doing so in Class 4A as a junior and Class 5A as a senior.
◊ Named to the second team of USA Today's all-classification, All-State team for Texas in 2015.
◊ A three-time, first-team selection to the Beaumont Enterprise's Super Gold team.
◊ As a senior, averaged 19.5 ppg, 12.0 rpg, 7.5 bpg and 2.0 apg to lead Central's Jaguars to a 30-4 finish and the quarterfinals of the 5A state playoff bracket.
◊ Selected to play in the TABC All-Star game and scored six points for the Gold team in the large school matchup.
◊ As a junior, averaged 22.3 points, 12.1 rebounds and 4.0 blocks per game to help the Jaguars to a 31-5 finish and the semifinals of the Texas 4A state tourney.
◊ Opened the state semifinal game by scoring eight points (on 4-of-5 shooting from the floor) in the first seven minutes before suffering a knee strain that prevented him from returning to action.
◊ As a sophomore, averaged 14.8 points, 13.0 rebounds and 4.0 blocks while helping Central to a 27-6 finish and the Class 4A's District 20 title before being upset in the area round of the 4A state playoffs.
◊ As a freshman, started for Central, which finished 23-10 and reached the round of 32 of the Texas 4A state playoffs.
◊ His mother, Cicely, played at Odessa Junior College from 1992-94, helping the Wranglers compile a combined 55-12 record and earn final national rankings of No. 4 in 1992-93 and No. 10 in 1993-94.
