Georgia will have 34 home baseball games in 2014. The 56-game college baseball regular season begins Feb. 14, and Georgia will start with a three-game series against Georgia Southern at Foley Field.
“The entire coaching staff is excited about our first season with the Georgia Bulldogs and looking forward to the tremendous support of the fans at Foley Field,” said Georgia coach Scott Stricklin. “We are thrilled with the progress the team made this fall. We will continue working hard on getting the Bulldogs back to Omaha.”
Georgia’s early season home slate is highlighted by the Georgia Tech game (March 4), the Georgia Invitational (March 7-9) and the Southeastern Conference opening series with 2013 College World Series finalist Mississippi State (March 14-16). The rest of the SEC home schedule features series with Texas A&M (March 28-30), Tennessee (April 11-13), South Carolina (May 2-4) and Kentucky (May 15-17). The aforementioned Georgia Invitational features the Bulldogs against Buffalo, North Florida and Western Carolina. There will be two games daily and one ticket is good all day.
Georgia welcomes back six starting position players and 10 pitchers who saw action in 2013. Georgia returns its entire starting rotation in sophomore Sean McLaughlin, senior Patrick Boling and junior Jared Walsh. A majority of the bullpen is back including senior closers Dylan Cole and junior Jarrett Brown.
The familiar faces around the Bulldog diamond will be junior second baseman Nelson Ward, sophomore catcher Zach Bowers, junior outfielder Hunter Cole, sophomore third baseman Jess Posey and sophomore designated hitter Daniel Nichols. Like last year, Walsh will see action at first base while McLaughlin will play in the outfield too. Three Bulldog starters from 2012 who missed last year due to injury and now are healthy include junior outfielder Conor Welton, junior catcher/pitcher Brandon Stephens and sophomore pitcher Pete Nagel. Last month, Baseball America ranked Georgia’s incoming recruiting class No. 21 nationally. It features three freshmen that were selected in the MLB draft this past June. These Bulldogs were outfielder Stephen Wrenn (28th round, Atlanta), pitcher Robert Tyler (28th round, Baltimore) and shortstop Mike Bell (37th round, Miami). All three newcomers are slated for important roles for the 2014 season.
