ATHENS----The Black team blanked the Red squad 4-0 Wednesday at Foley Field to take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five Fall World Series.
Junior Jared Walsh, sophomore Ryan Lawlor, and juniors Jared Cheek and Heath Holder combined on the seven-inning shutout. Walsh pitched three innings and scattered four hits with two strikeouts. Lawlor struck out two in his only inning of work while Cheek pitched two hitless innings before giving way to Holder. He preserved the victory with two strikeouts in the final frame, and he went 0-1 for at the plate with two walks.
Offensively, the Black team pushed across its first run in the bottom of the third. Junior Cody McCance led off with a double off junior Luke Crumley and later scored on a groundout by freshman Hunter Bening.
The Red team missed a scoring opportunity in the fourth. Sophomore Zack Bowers and Hunter Cole began the inning with back-to-back singles. Lawlor extinguished the threat with two straight strikeouts and got sophomore Daniel Nichols to fly out. In the bottom of the inning, the Black team extended its lead to 3-0.
Holder reached on a leadoff walk and Crumley was lifted in favor of freshman Connor Jones. Sophomore Jess Posey hit his first pitch for an RBI-double and freshman Mike Bell added an RBI-single to cap the scoring. Crumley wound up pitching 3.2 innings and allowed two runs on one hit, with a walk and three strikeouts.
Posey collected his second RBI of the day in the bottom of the sixth. Freshman Skyler Weber reached on a bunt single, took second on a stolen base and then made it to third on a throwing error on the play. He scored on Posey's base hit.
Game four of the series is slated for Friday at 5 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.
