Pitching coach Fred Corral has set the Bulldog rotation for the annual Fall World Series
Oct. 11, 2013
ATHENS----The Georgia baseball team’s annual fall World Series begins Sunday at Foley Field. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
Fall practice culminates with this five-game series as the team is divided in to two squads – a Red team and a Black team. All games will be seven innings and are free and open to the public.
Since the Fall semester began, the Bulldogs have been doing a mix of individual skill work, strength and conditioning, full team workouts and scrimmages.
“Our practices have been going extremely well, and they are handling the transition well and working hard,” Georgia coach Scott Stricklin said. “I’ve seen a lot of improvement. The Fall World Series will be a chance to compete against each other in a game-like atmosphere, and I’m looking forward to seeing how they compete with something on the line.”
The starting pitchers for the series will be redshirt sophomore David Sosebee and junior Ross Ripple in game one, senior Patrick Boling and freshman Robert Tyler in game two, junior Jared Walsh and junior Luke Crumley in game three, sophomore David Gonzalez and sophomore Mike Mancuso in game four, and sophomore Ryan Lawlor and redshirt sophomore Pete Nagel in game five.
Sophomore right-hander Sean McLaughlin, who saw action as a two-way player last season, has had a productive fall on the mound. However in the upcoming series, he will only see action as an outfielder. McLaughlin, Boling and Walsh comprised the SEC rotation in 2013 while Nagel was a major contributor as a freshman in 2012 before elbow surgery forced him to miss last season.
The returning starters on the Red team include sophomore catcher Zack Bowers, sophomore first baseman Daniel Nichols, junior second baseman Nelson Ward, junior Hunter Cole at third base plus junior outfielder Conor Welton and McLaughlin.
The returning starters on the Black team include junior catcher Brandon Stephens, sophomore third baseman Jess Posey, junior outfielder Justin Bryan plus Walsh at first base. Like Nagel, Welton and Stephens were regulars in 2012 but missed last year while recovering from an injury.
