ATHENS----The Georgia baseball team’s annual fall World Series begins Saturday at Foley Field. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
Fall practice culminates with the seven-game series as the team is divided in to two squads – The Red team and the Black team. The pitching matchup for game one will be sophomore right-hander Luke Crumley for the Red team against redshirt sophomore left-hander Patrick Boling for the Black team. Game two will be Sunday at 3 p.m. All games are free and open to the public.
The top veteran hitters for the Red team include senior shortstop Kyle Farmer and sophomore outfielder Hunter Cole. The returning starters on the Black team include senior catcher Brett DeLoach, senior third baseman Curt Powell and sophomore second baseman Nelson Ward. Three veteran Bulldogs are sidelined with injuries and will not play: junior outfielder Conor Welton, junior catcher Brandon Stephens and sophomore pitcher Pete Nagel.
Games three and four will be Tuesday and Wednesday at 5 p.m. Game three will feature an all-freshmen pitching matchup of 2012 MLB draft picks in David Gonzalez versus Sean McLaughlin. Gonzalez, a 6-1, 200-pound native of Gainesville, Ga., was a 40th-round pick of the New York Mets. McLaughlin, a 5-11, 184-pound native of Johns Creek, Ga., was a 38th round selection of the Atlanta Braves. They are slated to oppose each other again in game seven on Tuesday, Oct. 23.
For the past month, the Bulldogs have been doing a mix of individual skill work, strength and conditioning, full team workouts and scrimmages.
