ATHENS-----The University of Georgia baseball team begins full squad fall practice Monday, and a scrimmage is set for 4 p.m. at Foley Field.
The Bulldogs welcome back 23 returning lettermen including eight starting position players and 11 pitchers who saw action in 2011.
For the scrimmage, the team will be split into two squads. The returning starters on the Red team Monday will feature senior Peter Verdin (CF), junior Kyle Farmer (SS), sophomore Brandon Stephens (C), sophomore Conor Welton (LF) and senior Colby May at first base. The veterans on the Black team will be senior Levi Hyams (2B), senior Jonathan Hester (1B), junior Brett DeLoach (DH), senior Joey Delmonico (C) and junior Curt Powell at shortstop,
Hyams led the team in batting last year at .332 to go with five home runs and 38 RBI. Farmer had a team-leading eight home runs and 58 RBI while hitting .308 in 2011.
On Monday, Georgia will get its first look at several newcomers around the diamond including on the mound. The Red team will start freshman right-hander Pete Nagel while the Black team counters with right-hander David Sosebee. Nagel is a 6-4, 230-pound native of Metter, Ga., and he was named the Region 3-A Player of the Year. Sosebee is a 6-1, 200-pound native of Cleveland, Ga. Sosebee was a 48th round pick of the Boston Red Sox this past June after going 10-1 with a 0.61 ERA and 115 strikeouts in 66.2 innings for White County. They are slated to pitch two innings apiece. A total of 13 pitchers are slated to throw one or two frames in the 10-inning contest.
Georgia returns its top two starters in senior right-hander Michael Palazzone (10-5, 3.14 ERA) and redshirt-sophomore Alex Wood (6-7, 4.44 ERA). A majority of the bullpen is back including junior closer Tyler Maloof who ranked third nationally with 18 saves. Palazzone and Wood will start Tuesday's scrimmage at 4 p.m.
The annual Dogs versus Pups five-game series is set for Oct. 4-12. Fall practice will end with the Red-Black seven-game series slated from Oct. 15-25.
