ATHENS-----The University of Georgia baseball team begins full squad Fall practice Saturday including a scrimmage at 2 p.m. at Foley Field.
The Bulldogs welcome back 20 returning lettermen including six starting position players and 10 pitchers who saw action in 2012.
For the scrimmage, the team will be split into two squads. The Red team will feature familiar faces around the diamond in sophomores Nelson Ward (2B), Hunter Cole (LF), Justin Bryan (RF) and Heath Holder (1B). The veterans on the Black team include senior Curt Powell (SS), junior Conor Welton (CF), senior Brett DeLoach (C) and sophomore Jared Walsh (1B). Senior Kyle Farmer, who served as the starting shortstop for the USA Baseball team this summer, will not be in the lineup this weekend as the coaching staff gets a look at some of the newcomers.
Powell led the team in batting last year at .355 while Cole smashed seven home runs and Farmer tallied a team-high 41 RBI to highlight the team’s offense. Farmer was a 35th round pick of the New York Yankees this past June.
The Red team will start sophomore right-hander Luke Crumley while the Black team counters with sophomore right-hander David Sosebee. Crumley posted a 3-2 mark with a 3.86 ERA in 21 appearances including five starts in 2012. Meanwhile, Sosebee went 2-1 with a 5.82 ERA in eight starts. They are slated to pitch two innings apiece.
A total of eight pitchers will see action Saturday. A trio of right-handers will follow Crumley in redshirt freshmen Reggie McClain and John Taylor and sophomore Pete Nagel. Last year, Nagel went 1-1 with a 3.78 ERA and three saves in 23 appearances including seven starts.
After Sosebee, the Black team will feature redshirt freshman right-hander Mike Mancuso, sophomore left-hander Jared Walsh and sophomore left-hander Jarrett Brown. Last year, Walsh was recovering from elbow surgery and saw action as a designated hitter. However this summer, he went 1-2 with a 5.73 ERA in six appearances and batted .326 with 12 home runs in 33 games for the Keene Swamp Bats in the New England Collegiate Baseball Summer League. Brown went 0-0 with a 3.65 ERA in 15 relief appearances during his freshman year with the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs will hold another scrimmage Sunday at 3 p.m. Georgia will practice as a full squad from Sept. 8-16 and again from Sept. 24-Oct. 22. Fall practice will end with the annual Red-Black seven-game series slated to begin Oct. 13.
David Perno enters his 17th year at Georgia including his 12th season as head coach. The 2013 college baseball season begins on Friday, Feb. 15. The Bulldogs open with a three-game series at Georgia Southern. Georgia’s home opener at Foley Field will be Feb. 20 against Kennesaw State. A complete 2013 schedule and roster will be released later this year.
