ATHENS, Ga.---University of Georgia junior Hunter Cole has been selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 26th round of the Major League Baseball draft Saturday. He was the third Bulldog taken in the draft.
Cole, a 6-1, 186-pound native of Moore, S.C., was the 778th overall selection and drafted as a third baseman. This past season, he played in 53 games and helped the Bulldogs advance to the Southeastern Conference Tournament. He led the team with a .319 batting average, 66 hits, 14 doubles plus hit three home runs and tallied 31 RBI.
In his Bulldog career, Cole has played in 157 games with 155 starts and posted a .300 batting average, 14 home runs, 36 doubles and 87 RBI. An outfielder his first two seasons, he played primarily third base in 2014. Following his senior year at Dorman High School, Cole was set on attending UGA and still was a 49th round pick of the Washington Nationals in the 2011 MLB draft.
The MLB draft concludes on Saturday with rounds 11-40 starting at 1 p.m. All selections will be streamed live on MLB.com. The signing deadline for underclassmen and high school seniors selected is July 18.
