ATHENS-----Georgia completes its season-long eight-game road trip on Tuesday in Atlanta against Georgia Tech at Russ Chandler Stadium. First pitch will be at 7:30 p.m., and CSS/ESPN3 will televise the game. It will be the third meeting this season, and the series is tied 1-1. The Yellow Jackets posted a 7-5 win in Athens on April 19 while the Bulldogs demolished Tech 17-0 at Turner Field on April 23.
Georgia is batting .276 overall with a 4.60 ERA and fielding .975. Tech is batting .310 with a 4.36 ERA and .973 fielding percentage. Georgia's last regular season win at Tech came in 2004 (6-5) and that year also featured the Bulldogs sweeping Tech in Atlanta in an NCAA Super Regional to advance to the College World Series. Georgia last won the regular season series in 2007 and an overall series in 2008 that included eliminating the Jackets from an NCAA Regional in Athens.
Senior Bryan Benzor (3-2, 4.70) will make his seventh start of the year and second against Tech this year. He last pitched two innings in a start/staff outing in a 5-3 road win over College of Charleston Wednesday. He started against Tech on April 19 in the combined shutout at Turner Field. He pitched three innings and allowed two hits with no walks and four strikeouts. Tech will start sophomore RHP Josh Heddinger (2-0, 4.99).
Georgia (18-31, 5-19 SEC) closes out the SEC season at home with the Florida series starting Thursday. The Gators (28-25, 13-14 SEC) dropped a home series to Auburn last weekend while the Bulldogs were swept at 15th-ranked South Carolina. Saturday's season finale will be televised by WSB-TV, Channel 2 in Atlanta, and the Bulldogs will honor their seven seniors that day. Last weekend, Tech claimed a series from #2 UNC in Atlanta.
Bulldogs To Watch
Senior third baseman Curt Powell ranks among the SEC batting leaders with a .390 average and 78 hits this year. Powell has had 23 multiple-hit games including 10 three-hit games, one four-hit game and one five-hit game this year. He is one of only two Bulldogs to start all 49 games this season. He owns a .344 career average, appearing in 165 games for the Bulldogs including 159 starts. Powell is hitting a team-best .351 in SEC action this year. Powell is batting .700 (7-10) versus Tech this year and .500 for his career (14-28).
Senior Kyle Farmer (.288-3-43) has a chance to close out his career with the highest fielding percentage by a Bulldog shortstop and set another mark for highest in a season. Last year, he set a record with a .970 fielding percentage in 266 total chances and this year he is fielding at a .976 clip in 248 total chances. For his career which spans 208 games including 207 starts, Farmer owns a .968 fielding percentage in 1,023 total chances. Meanwhile, sophomore second baseman Nelson Ward (.320-1-15) may set a school record for fielding percentage as he carries a .986 mark. The current mark for a second baseman in a season is .983 set by Levi Hyams in 2011. The team's .975 mark is second only to the record .978 posted by the 2012 club.
Sophomore two-way standout Jared Walsh has been a regular in the Bulldog lineup, seeing time in the outfield/designated hitter and now as a starting pitcher. He is 2-4 with a 3.21 ERA and three saves in 16 games including four starts. As a position player, he has made 41 starts and owns a .290 batting average with two home runs and 20 RBI.
Aiming To Make SEC Tournament Field
With one SEC series remaining, the Bulldogs are looking to pass Tennessee and Missouri in the standings to make the 12-team SEC Tournament field. The Bulldogs are 5-19 (.208) while UT is 7-18 (.280) and UM is 8-19 (.296). Georgia has the tiebreaker over UT but not with the Tigers. The field is determined by SEC winning percentage.
