Up next, Georgia faces Ga. Tech (24-17) in the 10th annual Kaufmann Tire Spring Baseball Classic for Kids Tuesday at Turner Field. All proceeds benefit Children's Healthcare of Atlanta with tickets $12 and available through Ticketmaster. Georgia will have a staff night on the mound, starting with LHP Blake Dieterich (3-2, 2.76 ERA). It will the second time in his career he will get a start against Tech at Turner Field. As a freshman, he tossed five scoreless innings in a no decision.
Georgia coach David Perno has led the Bulldogs to a 7-2 mark against Tech at Turner Field. Tuesday's game will be televised live by Fox Sports South at 7:05 p.m. The Bulldogs won the first meeting this season in Athens 7-1. Game three of the series will be on the Tech campus on May 9. Georgia leads the overall series 112-95 dating back to 1950.
The Yellow Jackets under Danny Hall are 24-17 and coming off an ACC road series win over No. 6 North Carolina. The Yellow Jackets plan to start freshman RHP Josh Heddinger (1-4, 6.04 ERA).
Georgia resumes SEC play at #4 LSU (32-9, 12-6 SEC) Friday for the start of a three-game series. The Tigers dropped a series to #2 Kentucky (35-6, 13-5 SEC) in Lexington this past weekend. All three contests in Baton Rouge will be televised with Sunday's game on ESPN2.
Bulldog junior 3B Curt Powell (.346-1-15) has a nine-game hitting streak. In this stretch, he is batting .385 (15-for-39) with four RBI. In SEC action, he is batting .324-1-5, and in the UF series, he was the team's top hitter at .429 (6-for-14) with some exceptional defensive gems (2 putouts, 5 assists).
Bulldog sophomore LF Conor Welton (.302-0-20) has reached base safely in 14 consecutive games. He is batting .359-0-11 in SEC play this year. With freshman star centerfielder Hunter Cole (.316-6-17) out for the past five games due to a muscle strain in his right side, Georgia has shifted senior RF Pete Verdin (.282-0-17) to CF. Cole is Georgia's top power threat with six home runs and leading hitter in SEC action at .370-3-6. He has reached base in 19 straight games. In right field, junior Kevin Ruiz and freshman Justin Bryan have split time.
Georgia sophomore LHP Alex Wood (5-1, 2.57 ERA) and senior RHP Michael Palazzone (2-5, 5.46 ERA) went eight innings apiece against #5 Florida this past weekend in Gainesville. Wood got a no-decision in the 16-inning affair Friday while Palazzone notched his second straight SEC win in Saturday's 5-3 victory. Georgia's defense was outstanding, fielding .993 (1 error) in 148 total chances with six double plays.
