ATHENS-----The Georgia Bulldogs (21-14-1, 7-7-1 SEC) begin an eight-game road trip starting with #25 Ga. Tech (23-14) Tuesday and then resume SEC play Friday at SEC Eastern Division-leading and #9 Florida (23-13, 9-6 SEC).
Georgia captured its third straight SEC series this past weekend, winning two games over #23 Tennessee in Athens. The Bulldogs dropped the opener 5-3 on Thursday on ESPNU and then bounced back to take the series with 4-1 and 7-4 victories. The week began with a solid 6-2 road win over #14 Clemson.
Earlier this year in Athens, Georgia posted a 1-0 win over Tech courtesy of a walk-off single by junior catcher Brandon Stephens and a combined shutout by freshman Robert Tyler (8 IP) and junior Jared Cheek(1 IP). A win over Tech Tuesday would give the Bulldogs the series for the second straight year. Last year, Georgia won an SEC series over Florida 2-1 in Athens to close out the season. Tech won a home series over top-ranked Florida State this past weekend while the Gators claimed a road series over fourth-ranked South Carolina.Currently, Georgia is in third place in the SEC Eastern Division behind UF (9-6) and USC (8-7).
In SEC action, the Bulldogs rank among the conference leaders in pitching with a 2.64 ERA and a .976 fielding percentage. Overall this season, the Bulldogs are batting .261 with a 3.91 ERA and fielding .970, turning an SEC-best 35 double plays. Georgia has drawn an SEC-leading 176 walks but also has a league-high 263 strikeouts.
Sophomore LHP Ryan Lawlor(3-2, 3.44 ERA) notched his first complete game of his career this past Friday, defeating #23 Tennessee 4-1. He allowed a run in the first inning and then blanked the Vols there rest of the way with a career-high 10 strikeouts. In five SEC starts, Lawlor is 2-1 with a 2.00 ERA in 36 IP with 34 strikeouts.
Freshman RHP Robert Tyler(4-2, 1.56 ERA) continues to impress as he picked up another league win this past Saturday versus #23 Tennessee to clinch the series. In five SEC starts, Tyler is 3-2 with a 1.93 ERA in 32.2 IP with 28 strikeouts.
Offensively, junior 3B/OF Hunter Cole leads the club with a .329 average, 13 doubles and two home runs. Junior SS Nelson Ward (.292-2-25) has a team-best 25 RBI and an among the SEC leaders with 26 BB. Freshman CF Stephen Wrenn (.281-0-17).has a team-high 13 stolen bases (3rd in SEC) and collected his fifth assist on the year last Saturday to go with perfect fielding in 108 total chances. In SEC action, Georgia's top hitter has been junior 1B Daniel Nichols at .324-1-4. He hit .400 with two RBI against the Vols to boost his overall average to .289.
Sophomore RHP David Sosebee (0-1, 2.73 ERA) picked up his first career save this past Saturday, and it was only the second by the Bulldogs this season. He has a 1.23 ERA in SEC action, spanning five appearances for a total of 14.2 innings. Junior RHP Pete Nagel has the other save for the Bulldogs, and it came on March 12. Junior 1B/LHP Jared Walshhas missed the last five games due to a sore back. Georgia had a season-high crowd of 3,542 at Foley Field this past Saturday as it clinched the SEC series over #23 UT.
