Around the Bulldog Diamond
*Georgia (5-6) came alive in a sweep of UAB. After scoring just 34 runs in its first eight games of the year, the Bulldogs tallied 33 runs against the Blazers while posting a 1.67 team ERA. Also, Georgia raised its team batting average 36 points to .302. Up next, Georgia plays host to Western Carolina (6-6) on Tuesday at 5 p.m. followed by a three-game series with Liberty (9-2) on Friday.
*Senior shortstop Kyle Farmer and sophomore second baseman Nelson Ward headlined the offense last week. Farmer batted .692 (9-for-13) with four doubles and six RBI while Ward hit .611 (11-for-18, 4 RBI). For the season, Ward is batting a team-leading .438 (6th in SEC) while Farmer is next at .400. In the UAB series, Farmer became the second Bulldog to have a 5-hit game this year (Curt Powell vs. Belmont) while Ward had his second 4-hit game. Also, Farmer moved in to a tie for fifth in the Georgia record book with 58 career doubles including seven this year which leads the SEC. Powell (.362-0-7) has a seven-game hitting streak. He hit .438 (7-for-16, 6 RBI) last week.
*Freshman catcher Zack Bowers blasted two home runs last week, batting .333 (4-for-12) with five RBI. He leads the team with three home runs in only 23 at bats. The Bulldogs first six home runs of the year were solo shots until Bowers' two-run blast this past Sunday. Meanwhile, freshman Cody Sheedy enjoyed a fine week with his first bit of regular playing time, batting .444 (4-for-9), 3 runs, 1 RBI in three starts.
*Freshman RHP/OF Sean McLaughlin improved to 2-0, 2.57 ERA as the Friday night starter. He started in right field Sunday and went 2-for-3 with a two-run single on an 0-2 pitch to ignite a six-run outburst to snap a scoreless game.
*Senior LHP Blake Dieterich leads the team with a 0.68 ERA in five relief appearances covering a span of 13.1 innings. Sophomore LHP/OF Jared Walsh is 1-1 with a 1.29 ERA and 1 save in five outings to finish games. He is batting .290-1-6.
About The Catamounts
*WCU (6-6), coached by Bobby Moranda, is batting .255 with a 3.81 ERA and fielding .966. This past weekend, they defeated Hofstra in a doubleheader Sunday 7-6 and 6-2 after dropping the opener 5-2. Junior centerfielder Cody Jones leads the team with a .341 average while senior infielder Tyler White is the power threat at .304-3-12. WCU has not announced a starter.
Series History With WCU
*Georgia leads the series 36-18. The Catamounts posted a 5-3 win at Foley Field last year and the game at WCU was rained out once the Bulldogs arrived in Cullowhee, N.C.
