#9 Bulldogs Welcome Winthrop For 3-Game Set

ATHENS --- Ninth-ranked Georgia welcomes Winthrop to Foley Field Friday for a three-game series. First pitch on Friday will be 5:30 p.m. The series continues Saturday and Sunday with games at 1 p.m. each day. The Eagles, coached by Tom Riginos, are projected to finish fourth in the Big South Conference this year. They are batting .152 as a team with a 7.00 ERA and a .931 Fielding Percentage. This past weekend at home, they lost twice to nationally ranked Georgia Tech by a score of 5-0 and 5-3 and once to Kent State 11-3. Then this past Tuesday, the Eagles fell 13-3 to Western Carolina. Georgia leads the all-time series 12-7. The teams last met in 2010, a 4-2 Bulldogs victory. Bulldog Team Notes *The Bulldogs are 4-0 for the first time since 2009 when they won their first 14 games. *Georgia is batting .293 as a team with a 1.50 ERA and a .987 Fielding Percentage *Georgia's starting pitchers are 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA (4 ER in 20 IP); The Bulldog bullpen is 2-0, 1.13 ERA (2 ER in 16 IP) *Georgia opened its season here by sweeping Presbyterian last weekend, outscoring them 22-5. *On Wednesday, the Bulldogs defeated Ga. State 4-1 to remain undefeated *Against the Blue Hose last weekend, Georgia batted .330 and posted a 1.67 ERA. *After setting a school record with a .974 Fielding Percentage last year, Georgia's defense looks to be even better in 2012. To date, the Bulldogs have just two errors, for a .987 FLDG%. *Overall, 13 Bulldogs saw their first collegiate action in the PC series.
Individual Highlights This Season *Offensively in the PC series, Georgia was led by junior third baseman Curt Powell who went 6-for-9 with two RBI in the and senior second baseman Levi Hyams, who went 5-for-10 with 4 RBI. Against GSU, Hyams went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run. Counting the final three games of the 2011 season, Hyams has a seven-game hitting streak. *Redshirt sophomore LHP Alex Wood notched the win on Opening Day (6 IP, 5H, 1R, 0BB, 7K) as the Bulldogs registered a 6-1 decision. *In game two of the series, junior Brett DeLoach delivered a pinch-hit, two-out, two-run double for a 5-4 walk-off. *Five Bulldog pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout on Sunday. Redshirt freshman RHP Taylor Hicks made his debut Sunday and went four innings in his first start for a win on a staff day. *Freshman RHP Pete Nagel was impressive in his first career start against GSU Wednesday. He tossed five scoreless innings as part of a planned staff day and got a no-decision. Junior Bryan Benzor picked up the win while junior Blake Dieterich notched a save.
