Feb. 19, 2013
Fast Facts On The Bulldogs And This Week's Foes
After going 1-2 at Georgia Southern this past weekend, the Bulldogs have their home opener Wednesday at 5 p.m. versus Kennesaw State. The Owls (3-0) swept a season-opening series against Jacksonville State, winning 11-0, 2-1 and 9-3. The Bulldogs won their opener 6-5 but dropped the series after falling 3-2 and 11-2.
Georgia remains at Foley Field this weekend for a three-game set against Belmont (3-0) starting Friday at 5 p.m. The Bruins took a pair from Valparaiso (4-3 and 7-3) and beat Ohio 5-1 last weekend. They face No. 2 Vanderbilt (2-1) Tuesday.
Freshman RHP David Gonzalez will start the home opener versus the Owls. It will be his debut after not seeing any action against the Eagles. KSU plans a staff day starting with redshirt-sophomore RHP Steve Janas.
The Owls, led by coach Mike Sansing, return 22 lettermen from last year's team that won 34 games and fell to Belmont for the Atlantic Sun title. This year, KSU is projected to finish fourth in the A-Sun. The Bruins, led by Dave Jarvis, are coming off their best season in program history, winning 39 games including the Atlantic Sun title and an NCAA appearance. This year, they are in the Ohio Valley Conference and picked to finish second. Senior Chase Brookshire was named the preseason OVC Pitcher of the Year after going 8-4, 2.45.

The teams last met in 2012 with Georgia edging the Owls 3-2 at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville in a game to benefit Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. Kyle Farmer delivered a walk-off hit. Georgia and Belmont have faced each other just twice, and it was a 2001 series in Athens. The Bruins took game one 7-6 (10) while the Bulldogs gained a split with a 10-3 victory.
Noteworthy From GSU Series
*Georgia won its season opener 6-5 at Ga. Southern but lost the series after hiting just .248 with a 5.76 ERA.
*Georgia fell behind after the first inning in each game including erasing a 3-0 deficit in the opener.
*Sophomore RF/LHP Jared Walsh hit a home run and collected a save (1 IP, 3K) in his debut on the mound last Friday to become the first Bulldog to do both in the same game since Josh Fields in the 2008 season-opening win over then #1 Arizona. Walsh was limited to a designated hitter role in 2012 following elbow surgery his senior year of high school.
*RHP Sean McLaughlin became the first Bulldog true freshman pitcher in school history to start a season opener, and he earned a win.
*Sophomore 2B Nelson Ward enjoyed the best start offensively, hitting .500 (6-for-12) in the GSU series.
*Redshirt junior LHP Patrick Boling made his first start in two seasons this past Saturday and was the tough luck loser in the 3-2 contest. Still, he struck out a career-high 9 in 4.0 innings.
