*Georgia (1-2) dropped its 2014 season opening series to Ga. Southern in the debut of the Scott Stricklin era in Athens this past weekend. The teams delayed the opener a day due to the winter storm that hit the Southeast and played a doubleheader Saturday. It attracted a crowd of 3,494, which was the largest Opening Day crowd since the 1990 Foley Field renovation.
*The Eagles took game one 9-3 and Georgia bounced back to post an 11-3 victory in the second. Powered by an 11-run outburst in the third inning of the rubber game, the Eagles claimed the series Sunday.
*Georgia hit .262 in the series, had a 6.67 ERA and fielded .991.
*This week, Georgia plays host to Kennesaw State as freshman RHP Robert Tyler (0-0, 0.00) makes his first career start for the Bulldogs. Then, the Bulldogs make their first road trip of the season, a three-game set at #4 Florida State (3-0) starting Friday. The Seminoles series will be available via ESPN3.
*Junior outfielder Hunter Cole hit .700 (7-10) with three doubles and three RBI in the GSU series. In game three, the Eagles opted not to pitch to him until his last bat as he had four walks including one with the bases loaded. In his final at bat, he smacked a double off the centerfield wall.
*Junior infielder Nelson Ward batted .417-1-4 and played flawless defense at shortstop in the GSU series. Due to an injury to freshman SS Mike Bell, Ward made his first career starts at SS. A two-year starter at second base, Ward will remain at shortstop for at least a couple more weeks.
*Sophomore LHP Ryan Lawlor (1-0, 4.50) earned a win in his Bulldog debut. A transfer from Middle Georgia, he started and went six innings and allowed three runs on five hits with three strikeouts in an 11-3 win.
*Redshirt-sophomore RHP David Sosebee (0-0, 2.70) had the top relief performance of the GSU series. He pitched a career-long 3.1 innings with a career-high 5 strikeouts in the season opener.
