ATHENS, Ga. ---- Special Olympics at UGA along with the UGA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee played host to the fourth annual Home Runs for Hometown Rivals at Foley Field Monday.

The annual event serves as a fundraiser to benefit Athens-Clarke County Special Olympics. A total of more than 175 UGA student-athletes from various sports and approximately 65 special-needs athletes enjoyed a fun evening at Foley Field. The Special Olympians participated in a game and were partnered with UGA student-athletes. Some of the UGA student-athletes helped out on the field while others comprised a boisterous cheering section in the stands.

“It’s a great feeling to see the smiles on the kids faces and how much they enjoy being out here on our field,” said Georgia junior pitcher Dylan Cole. “It’s a cool experience for everyone involved.”

Special Olympics at UGA assists Athens-Clarke County Special Olympics by providing volunteers for programs to support students with intellectual and physical disabilities. The organization hosts events throughout the year in addition to raising awareness about issues affecting those with disabilities.

“It gives us some perspective and nice to take a break and give back to the kids from Clarke Central and Cedar Shoals,” said Georgia junior Kate Fuller, a member of the tennis team. “We realize how blessed we are, and this is just a great event.”

Athens-Clarke County Special Olympics is a non-profit organization that receives financial support through Athens-Clarke County Parks and Recreation, but is mainly funded through events hosted by Special Olympics at UGA.
