LYON, France - Former University of Georgia student-athlete Jarryd Wallace claimed the gold medal in the 200 meters with a world-record time of 22.08 on Sunday afternoon at the International Paralympic Committee Track & Field World Championships.

The mark of 22.08 improved upon the previous world-record time of 22.32 that Wallace set yesterday afternoon in the semifinal round.

The United States claimed the top three positions in the T44-classification of the 200 meters, as David Prince followed Wallace by taking second in 22.34, and Jerome Singleton earned the bronze in 22.342. The T44-classification is for athletes who have a single below-the-knee amputation.

Prior to the start of the IPC World Championships, Prince owned the previous world record of 22.47, recorded on June 16 at the U.S. Paralympic Track & Field National Championships in San Antonio, Texas.

Wallace, 23, will also compete in the 100 meters and the 4x100 relay by virtue of a top three finish at the National Championships in June. He finished second in the 100 meters at the event in 11.44, thus allowing him to claim a spot on the relay team.

Wallace is set to begin preliminary rounds of the 100 meters on Monday afternoon with the final to follow on Tuesday. The 4x100 finals will be held on Saturday morning.

The IPC World Championships mark the first major gathering of international track & field athletes since the London 2012 Paralympic Games last September. Live results from the event can be found at www.paralympic.org.
