Georgia Track & Field, Cross Country Post Stellar Classroom Showing
Jan. 7, 2014
ATHENS, Ga. --- The Bulldog track and field and cross country squads closed out the 2013 Fall semester in fine fashion as they prepare for the 2014 indoor and outdoor seasons.
The cross country team on the women’s side ranked second with a GPA of 3.391 while the men’s cross country team was also second with a 3.16. This marked the second consecutive semester that the Lady Bulldogs registered a 3.39 and were No. 2 in the women’s rankings. The men’s track and field team finished third with a 2.94 last semester and the women’s track and field team combined to record a 3.226, which was sixth in the rankings.
"The majority of our team was over 3.0 for the semester,” said Wayne Norton, who is preparing to start his 14th season as Georgia’s head coach. “We are extremely proud of the standard of continuing academic excellence that has been established by our men and women's teams. We have a large group of about 110 athletes. And when you take the overall semester grade point average for all of them, it comes out to almost 3.2. That is a very good showing for such a large and diverse group of young people.”
Seventy members of Georgia’s track and field teams posted semester averages of 3.0 or higher with eight completing the fall with perfect 4.0 marks.
"Congratulations are in order for our athletes, coaches, academic counselors and tutors,” Norton continued. "Now if we can successfully transfer all of this intelligence and brain power to the track, we won't have anything to worry about."
Many of those who excelled in the classroom also experienced immense success in their events. Lucie Ondraschkova, who was named the 2013 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) South Region Women’s Field Athlete of the Year, earned First Team All-America honors in the multi-events during both the indoor and outdoor seasons. The Opava, Czech Republic, native posted a 4.00 GPA last semester and was a Presidential Scholar since she had at least 14 graded hours.
Sophomore Maicel Uibo, a native of Polva, Estonia, posted at least a 3.50 GPA in his second fall after having a brilliant freshman campaign on the track. Uibo won the 2013 Southeastern Conference decathlon championship and was also a two-time First Team All-American in the multi-events.
LEAVING WITH A DEGREE IN HAND: Five former team members also graduated in December 2013. Phillip Adams from the men’s side and Nikola Lomnicka, Saniel Atkinson-Grier, Estefania Ramirez and Benita Kurtz all walked during graduation ceremonies.
Lomnicka won the 2010 NCAA hammer throw title and was a three-time SEC champion in the event. Atkinson-Grier, who is still training in Athens along with Lomnicka, captured the 2013 SEC outdoor high jump championship and was a five-time All-American for the Lady Bulldogs.
"Included among our graduates are Nicola and Saniel, two of the most decorated women track athletes we've had over the last five years or so,” said Norton. “Both stepped right in during their first year and were title contenders every time they competed at the SEC Championships.
“The University of Georgia track and field program is a lot better off having women like those two in it's history. They, along with Estefania and Benita, have also been very good ambassadors for our program by performing well academically and being involved in their communities.”
Adams, who finished his career sixth on the all-time 400-meter hurdles list at 50.99, also earned his degree in December.
"Phillip is our lone male graduate this fall which is fitting because he stands alone as the most consistent sprinter/hurdler that we had during the last five years,” Norton said. “He scored a lot of points for UGA and he probably contested more different events that any runner we've had. Phillip was not only an important runner for us, he was a good citizen who always support his teammates and the program. All of these graduates are well-rounded people who will contribute positively to society.”
Georgia opens its indoor season at the Auburn Invitational in Birmingham, Ala., (Crossplex) on Saturday, January 18. Full previews, results and recaps from the 2014 meets will be located at georgiadogs.com.
