ATHENS, Ga. --- With the Lady Bulldogs’ indoor track and field season roughly three months away, 13 members of Georgia’s team cheered on groups walking for a cure over the weekend.

The Lady Bulldogs set up on Pulaski Street in Athens and encouraged walkers as they passed during the seventh-annual “In Their Shoes” Athens Cancer Walk.  October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and all proceeds from the walk on Saturday, Oct. 13 went to the Loran Smith Center for Cancer Support.

Seniors Saniel Atkinson and Benita Kurtz, sophomores Quintunya Chapman, Maya Thomas, Torrenzia Lyles, Savannah Veal and Tynia Gaither and freshmen Shaunae Miller, Chanice Porter, Jasmine Norton, Briana Vaughn, Myasia Jacobs and Amber Bryant-Brock all joined forces to cheer on participants as they completed portions or all of the 13.1-mile walk.

Jacobs helped come up with the volunteering idea and thought the experience helped the Georgia women bond.

“It was a team-bonding experience that was good for us,” said Jacobs.  “We were coming up with chants to encourage the walkers and I think we all enjoyed the time out there.”

The Lady Bulldogs join the Georgia men in the teams’ indoor season opener during the Auburn Invitational at the Birmingham CrossPlex on Jan. 19.  UGA opens its outdoor season with the Georgia Relays on the Spec Towns Track in Athens on March 15-16.
