SACRAMENTO --- Junior Nick Vena and former Bulldog Reese Hoffa finished in the top seven during the shot put finals to highlight the first day of the USA Track & Field Championships in Sacramento on Wednesday night.
Vena, a native of Whippany, N.J., reached the 65-foot mark on his final two throws and finished with a top effort of 65 feet, 9 ¾ inches on his sixth and final toss to take seventh. The 2014 outdoor First Team All-American topped five other competitors in the finals with the third-best performance of his career.
Hoffa, who has finished in the top three 13 times at the USA Outdoor Championships including three victories, finished third on Wednesday after his longest throw measured 68-2.25. The 2012 Olympic bronze medalist improved on his second, third and fourth throws before fouling on his final two.
Another pair of Bulldogs will compete at USAs in Sacramento on Thursday. Senior Megan Malasarte will return to the track in the 800 meters after finishing fourth at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Malasarte races in the first round at 7:15 p.m. ET.
Fellow senior Johnathan Smith is set to compete in the first round of the 100 at 10:25 p.m. on Thursday. Smith ran in both the 4x100 relay and the 100 at Nationals, earning Second Team All-American honors in the 100.
