Georgia Track & Field, Cross Country Hosting Summer Camps
ATHENS, Ga. --- Georgia head track and field coach Wayne Norton and his staff will be hosting a series of camps during June and July. Children ages 11 and up can register for one of 11 camps with the first session starting on June 17.

The Throws Camp, Middle Distance/Distance Camp, Individual Cross Country Camp and Southeast Elite Pole Vault Camp will be held June 17-21; the High Jump Camp, Hurdles Camp, Sprints/Speed Development Camp and Long Jump/Triple Jump Camp will be held June 24-27; the Pole Vault Camp, Girls Pole Vault Camp and Beginner's Pole Vault Camp will be held June 27-30; and the Cross Country Camp and the Don Babbitt Elite Throws Camp will be held July 15-19.

The Throws Camp will focus on the fundamentals of the shot put, hammer, discus and javelin and teach safety precautions for all throwing events.

The Middle/Distance and Cross Country camps will teach race strategy (including pacing and positioning) and training methodology. This camp will touch on all phases of the training season.

The Southeast Elite Pole Vault Camp will be hosted by Georgia assistant coach Shawn Wilbourn and will focus on developing techniques that will allow pole vaulters to reach their full potential.

The High Jump Camp will concentrate on learning basic as well as advanced techniques in all phases of the high jump, including developing better bar clearance.

The Long Jump/Triple Jump Camp will focus on the approach run, planting and taking off. Plyometric exercises for explosive movement and hitch-kick and hang techniques will also be taught.

The Sprints/Speed Development/Hurdle camps will teach campers how to develop and improve 40-yard dash times and how to use starting blocks and hurdles. These camps will also teach improving reaction time, increasing speed, power and racing ability.

The pole vault camps on June 27-30 are designed to teach athletes how to vault higher and safer. Proper approach, the correct way to plant, take-off and swing are also lessons taught at this camp.

The Cross Country camp allows campers to run trails in the Athens area under the direction of Georgia distance coach Dave Hartman. Race strategy (including pacing and positioning) and training methodology are the focus at this five-day camp.
