ATHENS, Ga. --- Georgia sophomore Chanice Porter has been named the Southeastern Conference Women’s Field Athlete of the Week following her performance at the John Mitchell Alabama Relays, according to a league announcement.
Porter, a native of Pratville, Jamaica, sailed a career-best distance of 21 feet, 5 ¼ inches on her fifth attempt to win the long jump. Sporting a series that featured five marks measuring 20 feet or better, Porter cruised to her first outdoor victory in the event by more than a foot.
Porter is leading the nation in the long jump by more than eight inches. Her effort is the fifth best in Georgia history and the top mark for a Lady Bulldog since 2006 (Patty Sylvester, 21-7.50).
On the first day of the two-day meet in Tuscaloosa, Porter ran the 100-meter dash for the first time. She also won that event after crossing the finish line in 11.92.
Georgia will return to action at the Yellow Jacket Invitational in Atlanta on March 28-29.
