Hamilton runs in the mile at 1:05 p.m. on Saturday as she attempts to record a time that will qualify her for the coming NCAA Indoor Championships (March 14-15). The Springboro, Ohio, native won the 1500-meter race at last year's Southeastern Conference Outdoor Championships and was a First Team All-American in the mile indoors in 2013.
"We are excited to have a chance to go to Notre Dame and compete," said Cunniff. "There is a good field and we are hoping there will be some pacers. From talking to the meet organizers and other coaches, there are a lot of people who are going to this meet to run fast."
Last weekend at the Husky Classic in Seattle, Hamilton was in the mix with the lead pack in the mile. However, she got tripped and managed to battle back for a 26th-place finish with a time of 4:49.08. Hamilton set a school record in the event at the 2013 Husky Classic after clocking a 4:36.06.
So far this season, everyone in the nation's top 20 have run 4:38.24 or better.
With no "last chance" meets this season, Cunniff and the Bulldog coaching staff made the call to travel Hamilton to Notre Dame rather than count on a fast race at next weekend's SEC Championships to give her the time needed for Nationals.
"Carly showed very good fitness and was in great position last week, but had an unfortunate accident," Cunniff said. "She is ready for this race and we are confident she will get what she needs. I look forward to seeing her run at this track again since she ran a 4:35 leg on the (distance medley relay) last year and was a big reason why that team made it to Nationals. Now, I think she is ready to go back and get herself there."
