ATHENS, Ga. --- Freshman Devon Williams is in fifth place following the opening day of the USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, on Wednesday.
Freshman Devon Williams scored 3,731 points, which is the second-best day one tally of his career, through five events of the decathlon to move into fifth place. The Marietta native matched his personal best in the fourth event and established a new career best in the final event to highlight his day.
In the fifth and final event on Wednesday, Williams sped to a career-best time of 48.67 to take second in the 400-meter dash for 877 points. In fact, Williams’ time was the second best for any Bulldog in 2013.
Williams matched his collegiate personal best in the high jump to take 12th after clearing 6 feet, 1½ inches on his second try. His performance in the fourth event of the day scored him 687 points.
He was fourth in the 100 (11.02) to start his competition off for 856 points. Then, Williams managed a mark of 22-0.75 after two fouls in the long jump to score 748 points. The Kell High School graduate also opened with a pair of fouls in the shot put before reaching 37-0.25 for 17th place and 563 points.
Williams begins on Thursday with the decathlon’s sixth event, the 110 hurdles, at 11 a.m. ET. Freshman Briana Vaughn (100) and freshman Kisean Smith (800) from the Juniors side and senior Leslie Boozer (steeplechase), junior Megan Malasarte (800), sophomore Carly Hamilton (1500) and junior Johnathan Smith (100) from the Senior portion will also be competing on Thursday.
The top two finishers in each event from the Juniors group will be qualified to represent the U.S. at the Pan Am Junior Athletics Championships in Medellin, Columbia, on August 23-25.
The top three finishers in the Senior portion of the meet are expected to be selected to Team USA for the IAAF World Championships in Moscow, Russia, on August 10-18.
