DES MOINES --- Georgia freshman Devon Williams is in third place through five events during the opening day of the decathlon at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, on Wednesday.
The Marietta native has scored 3,657 points and trails the leader of the competition by only 132 points.
Williams cranks back up on Thursday with the 110-meter hurdles at 10:30 a.m. ET as the decathletes wrap up their final five events. Freshman Kisean Smith is scheduled to begin the open events for the Bulldogs in the 800 at 5:05 p.m. later that day. The Drake Relays continue through Saturday.
Thanks to a 49.86 in the 400, Williams wrapped up the day with his third second-place finish and 821 more points added to his total. He finished only seven hundredths of a second behind the winner in the fifth event.
Williams started the day by earning runner-up honors in the 100. He sped to a finish of 11.16 to score 825 points to begin the competition.
In his second event, he traveled 22 feet, 3 ¾ inches to also finish second in the long jump. This finish bumped his total up 767 points going into the shot put.
Williams sandwiched his best effort in the shot between his first and third throws for seventh place. He reached 39-5.25 for 608 points as the top five finishers had marks of at least 40 feet.
During the day’s fourth event, Williams cleared 5-11.25 on his third attempt in the high jump to finish 11th and score 636 points.
