BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- Georgia sophomore Justin Welch launched a throw of 65 feet, 7 ½ inches in the weight to win the Auburn Invitational at the Birmingham Crossplex on Friday night.
While Welch locked down a one-foot victory, fellow sophomore Caleb Whitener reached 58-8 on his second attempt to take fourth.
“We had an outstanding start to our throwing season,” Bulldog head coach Wayne Norton said. “Both Justin and Caleb improved over their 2011 season openers in this meet. This is the first time we have competed in this facility and I think it is great. My prediction is that we will do well on Saturday.”
Welch, who opened with an effort of 64-7.25 last year, reached at least 62-8 on all four of his fair attempts. The Luckey, Ohio, native was fourth at last year’s Southeastern Conference Championships and is tied at the No. 6 spot on the national performance list this season.
Whitener, a Dallas, Ga., native reached 58-8 on his second throw to hit a distance that is almost four and a half feet longer than his 2010 season-opening performance. He was one spot out of scoring at last year’s SEC meet after finishing ninth.
The Auburn Invitational will continue on Saturday morning with five field events beginning at 12:00 p.m. ET and the women’s 60-meter dash prelims starting at 1 p.m. Live results and a recap from Saturday’s action will be located at georgiadogs.com.
