ATHENS, Ga. --- Matias Koski of the Georgia swimming team has been named the Southeastern Conference Male Freshman of the Week, according to an announcement Tuesday by the league office.
Koski helped lift the Bulldogs to a 151-147 victory over Missouri last Friday at Gabrielsen Natatorium. With the Bulldogs needing a win in the final race, Koski led off the 400 freestyle relay with a season-best split of 44.91 to give Georgia a lead of more than 7/10ths of a second. The relay went on to post a time of 2:58.70 to win by more than two seconds and lift Georgia past the Tigers.
Koski also won the 50 freestyle with a season-low time of 20.46. He came in third in the 200 freestyle (1:39.17) and fourth in the 100 freestyle (45.59), earning 25 points individually and on relays for the Bulldogs.
Koski has Georgia's best times in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle this season. He is also in the top six in the SEC and in the top 25 in the country in each event.
Koski is a native of Duluth, Ga., who represented Finland in the 2012 Olympics.
Georgia's swimming and diving teams will return to action on Friday at 5 p.m. at Gabrielsen Natatorium against Emory.
