Margalis Wins 200 IM; 7 Bulldogs Make It To Pan Pacs

IRVINE, Calif. --- Former Georgia swimmer Melanie Margalis won the 200-meter individual medley at the Phillips 66 National Championship late Sunday.


Margalis, who completed her eligibility last season, posted a winning time of 2:10.20. Margalis’ time is the third-fastest in the world this year.


Rising senior Maddie Locus came in third in the women’s 50-meter freestyle with a time of 24.81. Former Lady Bulldog Amanda Weir placed sixth in the consolation final in 25.61.


In the men’s 200-meter individual medley, rising junior Chase Kalisz took fifth in 1:58.85 and rising junior Ty Stewart came in eighth in 2:01.25. Signee Gunnar Bentz won the B final in 1:59.19.


Signee Kevin Litherland came in 15th in the men’s 800-meter freestyle in 8:06.39.


Based on performances in the Phillips 66 National Championship, seven Georgia swimmers qualified for the United States Pan Pacific Championships roster. Representing the U.S. in Australia Aug. 21-25 will be Margalis, Locus, Kalisz, Hali Flickinger, Shannon Vreeland, Andrew Gemmell and Nicolas Fink. Former UGA assistant coach Alex Braunfeld will be a men’s assistant.
