LONDON --- Two swimmers with ties to the Georgia program came in ninth in their respective events at the Olympics on Friday.
Rising junior Andrew Gemmell stopped the clock in 14:59.05 in the men's 1,500-meter freestyle to take ninth. Incoming freshmen Ediz Yildirimer of Turkey and Matias Koski of Finland were 26th in 15:29.97 and 27th in 15:34.80, respectively.
Germany's 4x100-meter medley relay that featured former Lady Bulldog Sarah Poewe placed ninth in 3:59.95.
Only the top eight finishers in the events advanced to the finals.
Former Lady Bulldog Kara Lynn Joyce finished in a three-way tie for 16th in the women's 50-meter freestyle prelims with a time of 25.28. The three women moved on to a swim-off, where Joyce improved her time with a 25.16, but trailed Great Britain's Amy Smith (24.82). The top 16 advanced to the semifinals.
Former Bulldog Chris Colwill’s quest for an Olympic medal begins Monday in men’s 3-meter diving, while ex-Bulldog Troyden Prinsloo of South Africa will compete next Friday in the men’s 10-kilometer open water race.
