Fink Becomes Latest Bulldog To Advance To Worlds

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. --- Another day, another Bulldog on the United States roster for the FINA World Championships.

Rising junior Nic Fink came in second in the 100-meter breaststroke on Friday at the USA Swimming Phillips 66 National Championships. His runner-up time of 1:00.24 catapulted him to ninth in the world rankings and put him in the World Championships, which will take place July 28-Aug. 4 in Barcelona, Spain.

“That’s one of the greatest swims we’ve ever had,” Georgia coach Jack Bauerle said. “He just changed leagues. He went from Triple-A to Major League Baseball, maybe even the World Series.”

Rising seniors Andrew Gemmell and Shannon Vreeland, rising junior Jordan Mattern, rising sophomore Chase Kalisz and former Lady Bulldog Megan Romano previously qualified for the World Championships.

Also on Friday, incoming freshman Olivia Smoliga came in fifth in the 100-meter backstroke and Gemmell took sixth in the 400-meter freestyle with a time of 3:52.69.
