Gemmell Comes In Fourth In 400 IM At Olympic Trials

OMAHA, Neb. --- Andrew Gemmell's fourth-place finish in the men's 400-meter individual medley highlighted Georgia's showing in the United States Olympic Trials on Monday at CenturyLink Center.

Gemmell, an open water specialist who is a rising junior for the Bulldogs, stopped the clock in 4:16.07 to come in fourth. Ryan Lochte (4:07.06) and Michael Phelps (4:07.89) placed first and second to snare spots in the London Olympics next month. Georgia signee Chase Kalisz, who trains with Phelps in Baltimore, took sixth in 4:16.32, while ex-Bulldog Robert Margalis placed eighth in 4:21.27. During the prelims earlier Monday, ex-Bulldog Bill Cregar came in 20th with a time of 4:24.13. Signee Ty Stewart placed 23rd in 4:24.53, followed by former Bulldog Peter Benner in 44th in 4:27.86 and rising sophomore Alec Cohen in 108th in 4:39.93.

Rising sophomore Nic Fink came in 11th in the men's 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 1:01.14. Incoming freshman Zach Gunn placed 113th in the event as he stopped the clock in 1:05.30.

Rising junior Will Freeman touched in 3:59.57 to come in 53rd in the men's 400-meter freestyle. Cohen took 57th with a time of 3:59.75, while rising junior Jameson Hill was 64th in 4:00.48 and former Bulldog J.P. Arnold was 90th in 4:03.36.

Three Lady Bulldogs had three top-16 finishes in the women's 400-meter individual medley: Rising sophomore Amber McDermott (10th, 4:44.86), rising senior Jana Mangimelli (12th, 4:45.13) and rising sophomore Nicole Vernon (14th, 4:46.63). Also, incoming freshman Annie Zhu placed 17th with a time of 4:48.82, followed by rising junior Melanie Margalis 34th in 4:51.83, signee Hali Flickinger 60th in 4:55.66 and rising sophomore Anna Neumeister 62nd in 4:56.17.

In the women's 100-meter butterfly, former Lady Bulldog Morgan Scroggy led the Georgia contingent with a 36th-place effort, stopping the clock in 1:00.52. Rising sophomore Lauren Harrington came in 41st with a time of 1:00.72, while ex-Lady Bulldog Andrea Georoff was 59th in 1:01.32 and former Lady Bulldog Anne-Marie Botek was 75th in 1:01.70. The semifinals took place Monday night and the finals will be held on Tuesday.

The Trials will continue on Tuesday with prelims in the men's and women's 100-meter backstroke, the women's 400-meter freestyle, the women's 100-meter breaststroke and the men's 200-meter freestyle. Medals will be given in the women's 100-meter butterfly, the women's 400-meter freestyle and the men's 100-meter breaststroke.
