SANTA CLARITA, Calif. --- Andrew Gemmell, a rising senior for the Georgia swimming team, qualified for the FINA World Championships by winning the USA Swimming Open Water National Championships 5-kilometer title at Lower Castaic Lake.
The World Championships will be held July 19-Aug. 4 in Barcelona, Spain.
The 5K race came down to the touch as Gemmell was able to outreach Floridian Joey Pedraza. Gemmell stopped the clock in 57 minutes, 22.07 seconds, while Pedraza was the runner-up in 57:22.68.
"I wanted to leave it all out there in the water, and I was fortunate to touch first," Gemmell said. "It's great to get on the team, and I'm excited to be heading to Barcelona to represent the U.S."
Earlier at the Championships, Gemmell came in third in the 10K with a time of 1 hour, 55 minutes, 11.136 seconds.
Gemmell represented the United States at the 2012 Olympics in the 1,500-meter freestyle.
