ATHENS, Ga. --- Charles "Charlie" Lathrop Guyer III, an All-America swimmer for Georgia in the 1950s, passed away earlier this week in Sarasota, Fla. He was 84.
After graduating from Savannah High School in 1948, he joined the Navy and was stationed in Guam. After the service, he went to Georgia on a scholarship as a swimmer, where he excelled as a two-time All-American in the butterfly (1951 and 1952) and led UGA to back-to-back SEC championships.
Guyer went on to become President of Alexander Wood Products from 1958-1990. During that time, he was also President of the Athens Touchdown Club, and member of the Athens Country Club, Gridiron Society and the City Club.
Guyer was a faithful member of the First Methodist Church of Athens for 60 years, where he served as a board member and Sunday School teacher. He also taught a Bible study in the Sarasota community up until the day of his passing.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Loretta "Jerry" Alexander Guyer, of Athens, Ga.; his sister, Gloria Guyer Driggers; his son, Gary Lathrop Guyer, his wife, Barbara, and their children, Lane, Allison (and her husband, Josh), Lath, and Rhett, of Athens, Ga.; his daughter, Charme Guyer Bradberry, her husband, Jeb, and their children, Lori (and her husband, Sam), Buck (and his wife, Meggie), and Maggie (and her husband, Scott), of Athens, Ga.; his son, Charles Greg Guyer, his wife, Lisa, and their children, Savannah, Grant, and Greer, of Wyndmoor, Pa.; and his great-grandchildren, Walker, Charlie, and Tullis.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16, at the Athens First Methodist Church, with the Rev. Chuck Hodges and Jerry Varnado officiating. Immediately after the service, there will be a reception in Hancock Hall at the church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Methodist Church of Athens, Ga., the YMCA and Young Life.
