ATHENS, Ga. --- The Georgia diving teams will face off against their counterparts from 13 schools in the three-day Georgia Diving Invitational to kick off their 2014 competition. The invitational is slated for Friday through Sunday and will be held in Gabrielsen Natatorium.
Georgia will host divers from six SEC teams: Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Tennessee, Missouri and Kentucky. Clemson, Towson, James Madison, Iowa State, SMU, Kansas and N.C. State also will be represented.
"This is always a good meet to start the second half of the year," Georgia diving coach Dan Laak said. "It does give us an opportunity to see some of the divers in the conference that we haven't seen thus far. I always look forward to this meet as it gives us something to work towards right after the Christmas break."
The competition will involve a similar format each day with the preliminary dives first, followed by the finals on each board. The prelims will begin at 11 a.m. on both Friday and Saturday. The women will compete on the 1-meter and the men will be on the 3-meter on Friday. The groups will switch on Saturday, with the women on the 3-meter and the men competing on the 1-meter.
The top six divers from the springboard finals will participate in the Bulldog Shootout on Friday and Saturday at 6 p.m. The shootout is a round-by-round, knock-out event. Each diver will do only one dive, and the diver with the lowest score at the end of each round will be eliminated. The elimination process will continue until there are only two divers left with one dive remaining.
On Sunday, both groups of divers will compete on platform, with the men beginning at 10 a.m. and the women slated for a 2 p.m. start. There will be no shootout that evening.
Admission to the Georgia Diving Invitational is free each day.
