ATHENS, Ga. --- The Georgia divers will kick off the 2012 portion of the schedule as they play host to the Georgia Diving Invitational and Shootout Tuesday through Thursday at Gabrielsen Natatorium.

The event has a format similar to the upcoming SEC, Zone and NCAA Championships. Prelims will start at 11 a.m. each day and a shootout for the top six divers will begin at 6 p.m. Admission is free.

Slated to join Georgia for the invitational are SEC opponents Auburn, Florida, Kentucky, LSU and Tennessee, along with Drexel, Iowa State, Penn State, SMU and Virginia.

"We are just getting back for the second semester and after taking a week or so off it's more of just a fun meet and a way to get the season going,” Georgia diving coach Dan Laak said. “We are looking to see where we are going into the second semester.”

Georgia's Ann-Perry Blank ranks sixth on 1-meter and 10th on platform in the SEC. Tennessee’s Tori Lamp is the conference leader on platform and is expected to compete.  On the men's side, SEC leaders Greg Ferrucci of Kentucky (1- and 3-meter) and Mauricio Robles of Tennessee (platform) are slated to perform. Georgia's Owen Blank and Alex Watson are 10th in the SEC on the 1-meter and platform, respectively.

“We have very few platform events, so that is one of the key events in the meet,” continued Laak. “We have Owen Blank, Bobby Chambless, Alex Watson, Ann-Perry Blank, Ansley Long, Hannah McElhannon, Darcie O’Brien, and Landon Watters that are all performing platform, and it’s a way to gauge where they are and what they need to do to move forward.  Half of the SEC will be here, so it is a good way to see where you are compared to the other divers, especially the ones you haven’t seen yet this year.”

In the shootout, each diver will do a dive of his choice with the competitor with the lowest score from each round eliminated until two divers remain. The order of each round is determined by the scores from the previous round with the best score going last. There are five groups and each diver will call out his dive before he goes and cannot repeat a group.
